HPI Check explained
How it works:
• The HPI Check verifies and crosschecks the vehicle registration mark (VRM) and the vehicle identification number (VIN), provided by the consumer to give a clear picture of a vehicle’s status.
• Customers simply call HPI on 01722 422 422 or can conduct an instant online HPI Check at www.hpicheck.com.
• The HPI Check costs £19.99 online, and £24.99 through the call centre.
• All HPI Checks come with full telephone back-up and are supported by an instant emailed version of the report. A confirmation pack can be posted within 48 hours for an additional cost of £1.75.
The HPI Check:
• Confirms whether a vehicle has outstanding finance – the biggest risk facing car buyers with 1 in 4 vehicles we check having outstanding finance. If the loan remains unpaid, the car belongs to the finance house – the buyer could lose the car and the money they paid for it!
• Identifies whether a vehicle is recorded as stolen – HPI discovers 30 stolen vehicles every day. Many get sold as ‘bargains’ to unsuspecting buyers who have to return the car to its rightful owner, leaving them thousands of pounds out of pocket.
• Highlights insurance write offs. Did you know that every year nearly half a million cars involved in accidents are declared by insurers to have been too badly damaged to be repaired safely or economically – some still find their way back on the road? 4 out of every 100 vehicles checked with HPI have been written off.
• Protects against clocking. The HPI Check includes access to the National Mileage Register of over 125 million mileages, alerting car buyers and dealers to potential mileage discrepancies and helping them avoid paying over the odds for a car that has more miles on the clock than it first appears. 7 in 100 vehicles checked by HPI have a mileage discrepancy.
• Uses information supplied by DVLA and DVLNI, to confirm if the vehicle has had a plate transfer.
• Confirms the identity of the vehicle, including make, model, colour, door plan and engine size.
• Includes HPI’s unique document check that confirms a vehicle’s paperwork (V5C) is genuine and helping to identify cloned vehicles.
• Delivers an integral CO2 Check to provide a quick and easy to understand certificate on the CO2 ratings for a vehicle.
• Included as standard, HPI’s valuation service which can help determine if the asking price of a vehicle is fair and accurate. The valuation is based on the vehicle’s mileage, condition and whether it is being sold privately or by a motor dealer. It is also available separately online or by SMS text for a nominal fee of £1.50.
• Is covered by the HPI Guarantee, which offers cover of up to £30,000 with every Check and is the only history check guarantee to provide cover for cloned vehicles (subject to terms and conditions). Many stolen vehicles go on to be cloned, illegally taking the identity of a legitimate vehicle. HPI can tell buyers if that bargain is a clone, helping them avoid being duped by used car criminals.
